#MumDeeWalks 4 Little Troopers - Update 1 - The Launch
Hello my Darlings and welcome to Mum Dee Does. I am Dee, a mum who does (it all), and today I begin my first ever charity fundraising campaign!
I am still inspired by the weight loss thoughts and a public announcement from yesterday so I thought why not strike while the iron is hot and enhance this journey by adding a charity fundraiser element to it. It will make me accountable to you, my Darlings, which will motivate and encourage me beyond any pep talk James (the husband) could muster.
So here is my official pledge to you. I will:
Start where I am
I live on a small island in Orkney which offers some fantastic scenery, beautiful wildlife, untamed beaches and well-maintained public roads. My first walk today went really well - I saw cows, horses, sheep, a field of hay, flowers, birds, sea, lake and beautiful clouds! I will walk anywhere, everywhere and anytime! Yes, we have no gyms, no pools, no saunas... But I feel that the natural environment that is so abundant here in Orkney is the best backdrop for this endeavor!
Use what I have
Walking is a great low-impact full-body exercise that doesn’t require any special equipment. I don’t have fancy walking boots - so I am walking in my green wellies for now. Sure, I will need to buy a better pair if I want to save my feet from falling off, but wellies will do for now! I also took my phone to chart the walk (and to use in case of emergencies).
Do what I can
Admittedly, I am very out-of-shape, but I went on my first walk today, did my best and actually surprised myself with how enjoyable the first 5 miles were! Little Ronnie was walking with me for a little bit and then I carried him in our little front-facing baby-carrier pouch that was handed-down to us from our neighbours. My feet are killing me, everything hurts and I am exhausted beyond belief - but I also feel great and very proud of myself!
I am just an ordinary person, with no special abilities, but I will do what I can. I will count every little walk that I take towards this challenge - be it a trip to our local beach, a walk to check the post box (200 yards away, mind) or taking my little boy triking (I actually converted his trike to a bike now, but I can’t stop calling our outings “triking sessions” - it’s a habit!).
Charity: Little Troopers
I was looking long and hard at all the fantastic charities that I may want to support. I work with and for a small charity in South Wales which I considered first, but I wanted this challenge to be more personal to my current situation.
So I looked at SSAFA, Seafarer UK and Scotty’s Little Soldiers. All of them tugged at my heartstrings and resonated strongly with my situation as an RFA wife, but the Little Troopers is set up and specifically helps the children who have parents serving in the British Armed Forces. They understand the challenges that the little ones face due to separation, or frequent moving of home and school. Even though the scope of this charity does not include those in the RFA. I asked them and sadly, at this time the charity commission deem their beneficiaries to be serving regular or reserve British Armed Forces and unfortunately RFA is not classed as such. This did not deter me, as I still want to do something good for the children in a very similar situation to my little Ronnie, as well as their mums (or dads) left behind, who must be feeling a lot like I do. It is not easy when mummy or daddy go away for a long long time...

Little Troopers it is! Decision made, time to define my fundraising challenge in measurable terms and specific goals. For this purpose I created a new challenge summary page on this website, so for full details, measurable goals, challenge updates and more - check this out!
